overview

Upstream explores Wellington’s café culture, the challenges facing the coffee industry, and how consumers can help support local cafés. Drawing on my six years of experience as a barista, I wanted to create a website that answered common questions about where coffee comes from, why prices have increased, and what this means for Wellington’s café scene.

Process

Through industry research, interviews with baristas, and responses from Wellingtonians, I gathered stories and information to shape the website’s content. An animated infographic explains coffee’s journey to New Zealand, while an interactive map highlights locals’ favourite cafés. The site also shares barista perspectives and practical ways to support the industry.

Promotional zines were made and placed around local cafés, and the website hit 500 page views in the first month. Upstream brought together my interests of website design and coffee, using visual storytelling to make complex information more accessible and encourage positive change within Wellington’s coffee culture.
